Hansi Flick reaches frustrating conclusion about Barcelona’s struggles as Deco gets involved

Barcelona have been doing some soul-searching in recent weeks, having started the season on fire, but then put themselves on the brink of the title race after just 1 win in 7 games. Coach Hansi Flick and sports director Deco are investigating the causes.

According to Diario AS, Deco has been meeting with Flick and some of the captains to try to find the causes of his decline, collecting information about his physical, tactical and mental state. His effort hopes to diagnose the problems, knowing that he cannot act in the January transfer market, and that this year will be a referendum on his management.

He arrived at the club and quickly became the strong man in the decision-making room. Former coach Xavi Hernández did not convince him and he was eliminated, and now he has brought in Flick and star signing Dani Olmo as standard bearers of his time in charge.

Flick has also been working on a solution, says Sport. His opinion on their difficulties is that more performances against Atlético de Madrid will allow them to get on the right track, as he noted in his subsequent press conference. The other side of the coin is that, in his opinion, his defeats against Las Palmas and Leganés, also at home, were due to the attitude of his players, something that does not sit well with him.

Previously, players like Lionel Messi would have the quality to win those games without necessarily performing, but Flick doesn’t have that talent at his disposal. When they return, Flick will tell his players that they must give their best regardless of their opponent, whether it is an important match or a less important encounter.

What seems inevitable is that Flick will need more from his second batch of players in the second half of the season to make it a success. Part of keeping up against smaller teams is bringing in players with something to prove and ensuring there are fresh legs to compete against teams that have nothing to lose.
