Real Madrid were defeated by Barcelona on Sunday night, in a surprising defeat in the Spanish Super Cup final. The Whites came into the match as favorites and, despite taking the lead, they had no answer for their rivals.
There was no shortage of camera cuts from Florentino Pérez in the directors’ box, alongside the president of the RFEF, Rafael Louzan, and his Barcelona counterpart, Joan Laporta, who this time managed to maintain his composure at the King Abdullah Stadium. According to Relevo, barely a word was said in the VIP seating section of Real Madrid, with head scout Juni Calafat, sports director Santiago Solari, ambassador Roberto Carlos and Executive Committee member Carlos Ocaña.
Everyone avoided glances and left the stadium with serious faces after the match, quickly entering inside after the final whistle and staying only as long as it took Barcelona to lift the trophy. Similar scenes played out in the countryside. Of the coaching staff, only Francesco Mauri spoke with any of the players after the game to try to improve morale. With the exception of Carlo Ancelotti’s press conference, only Luka Modric spoke to the press, making brief statements described as ‘insufficient’ by Relevo. Of the players, only Jude Bellingham applauded all the Barcelona players collecting medals.
Ancelotti has a difficult task to recover his team from the defeat against Barcelona, but will return to action on Thursday night against Celta Vigo in the Copa del Rey, in front of a now expectant home crowd at the Santiago Bernabéu. That said, Real Madrid still maintain a five-point lead over Barcelona in La Liga and are just one point behind Atlético Madrid in first place.
