Copa del Rey round-up: Espanyol suffer shock defeat as three other La Liga sides progress

The second round of the 2024-25 Copa del Rey began on Tuesday, featuring four La Liga teams: Espanyol vs Barbastro, Celta Vigo vs Salamanca CF UDS, Las Palmas vs CE Europa, and Real Valladolid vs Real Avila.

Barbastro 2-0 Espanyol
Espanyol made unwanted history as the first La Liga team eliminated this season, with a brace from Andres Barrera sending Barbastro to the third round. The loss increased pressure on head coach Manolo Gonzalez.

Salamanca CF UDS 0-7 Celta Vigo
Celta Vigo cruised into the next round with a dominant 7-0 win. Six different players scored for Celta: Williot Swedberg, Hugo Sotelo, Pablo Duran, Tadeo Allende, Carlos Dominguez, and Fer Lopez (x2).

CE Europa 1-2 Las Palmas
Las Palmas continued their strong form with a 2-1 win. Ollie McBurnie scored both goals for Las Palmas, including one after Julian Mahicas’ equalizer, helping Diego Martinez’s side progress.

Real Avila 2-4 Real Valladolid (AET)
Real Valladolid survived a scare to advance after extra time. Adri Carrion’s brace cancelled out Juanmi Latasa’s opener for Valladolid, and Marcos de Souza forced extra time with a late goal. In extra time, de Souza and Kike Perez scored again, securing the win.
