Christensen injured Barcelona Barbastro

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has not confirmed whether Wojciech Szczesny will make his Copa del Rey debut as they travel to face Barbastro for the second year in a row on Saturday. He will also not be able to count on Andreas Christensen.

Marc-André ter Stegen will be out for much of the season, while Lamine Yamal returned to group training this week and is reportedly aiming to return in the Spanish Super Cup next Wednesday against Athletic Club. That is also the case with Ferran Torres, but otherwise Barcelona is in good health.

Christensen has been back in training for several weeks after an Achilles tendon problem, but on Friday Flick explained that he was also considering the Spanish Super Cup as a possible return date.

“Andreas is doing very well, he has increased his workload a lot, but it is too early. He will go with us to Saudi Arabia and we will see. But the plan is for us to be with us after Saudi Arabia.”

Ter Stegen’s replacement was Szczesny, nicknamed Tek, who was signed under an emergency injury sentence, coming out of retirement. However, Iñaki Peña has retained the number one spot since then, but it has been suggested that the Copa del Rey and potentially the Super Cup could give Szczesny a chance.

“Tek is training very well, but we haven’t made the decision yet. So we will wait and see,” Flick said.
