Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has refrained from committing to a specific position for Aurelien Tchouameni when he returns from injury. Los Blancos are set to face Athletic Club at San Mamés on Wednesday night, and Ancelotti is gradually welcoming back injured players, including Rodrygo Goes, who returned on Sunday.
Ancelotti confirmed that Tchouameni is fit for action in Bilbao, having returned to full training this week after missing all of November due to an ankle issue.
“Tchouameni is fine, he trained well, and has recovered well. He’s ready to play from the start, but we’ll see tomorrow where I decide to play him,” Ancelotti said.
“It’s a technical decision, and I have complete confidence in a player we’ve won two Champions Leagues with. Fran Garcia has contributed significantly in attack, been solid defensively, and seized his opportunity.”
In Tchouameni’s absence and with Eder Militao also sidelined, Castilla graduate Raul Asencio has stepped in admirably. During this period, Real Madrid has conceded only two goals against Liverpool and kept three clean sheets in La Liga.
“Raul has shown in these four games that he’s a reliable center-back with a solid understanding of the position. He’s well-positioned, composed, and highly motivated. He’s brought a lot to the team. Of course, he will eventually be on the bench, but I need to carefully consider when to make that decision.”
“What has impressed me most is his calmness. He’s never been anxious. I don’t think facing Athletic is a test for him; I believe he’s already passed that. Based on merit, he’s now a part of our squad.”
