In an unforgettable moment during match 17 of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25 at the Adelaide Oval, Andrew Tye showed his brilliance with an extraordinary one-handed catch to dismiss Jake Weatherald. This incredible effort left cricket fans and commentators in awe as Perth Scorchers gained early momentum against Adelaide Strikers.
Andrew Tye’s spectacular catch
The expulsion occurred in the Strikers’ fifth inning, pitched by Jason Behrendorff. Weatherald attempted to charge down the field and hit a behind-the-back pitch midway through the game. However, Tye had other plans. Positioned in midfield, Tye jumped at precisely the right moment, extending his right hand to pluck the ball out of the air in an astonishing display of athleticism and reflexes. He landed safely, grabbing the ball and leaving the Strikers reeling at a critical moment.
Weatherald, who managed 8 runs off 8 balls with a boundary, became another victim of a top-order collapse in which big names like Chris Lynn and Ollie Papa leave cheap. The brilliance of Tye’s catch not only dismissed a potential threat but also set the tone for a disciplined and impactful bowling performance by the Scorchers.

Strikers fight but lower order fights back
Batting first after losing the toss, the Adelaide Strikers struggled for partnerships on a challenging Adelaide Oval pitch. After the early ejections of Lynn (1 of 3), Pope (1 of 5) and Weatherald (8 of 8), D’Arcy short (22 of 19) and Alex Ross (20 off 15) tried to stabilize the Srikers’ innings with brief but valuable contributions. However, their layoffs deepened the crisis even further, as they were reeling at 58/8.
The lower order, led by Brendan Doggett and Cameron Boycemounted a spirited recovery. Doggett, known primarily for his bowling, played a remarkable knock of 47 not out in 39 balls, hitting five fours and two sixes. Boyce provided solid support with 29 off 22, including three fours and a six. Their partnership injected a much-needed boost, allowing the Strikers to post a fighting total of 142/8 in 20 overs.
The Scorchers’ pitchers were relentless, with Jason Behrendorff leading the charge. Behrendorff’s figures of 2/14 in four overs epitomized control and precision. Lance Morris (2/19) and Jhye Richardson (3/29) also made significant contributions, exploiting the conditions effectively. While Tye did pick up one wicket, his catch stole the show despite a costly spell in which he conceded 46 runs.
