South AfricaThe rising star, Corbin Boschput in an impressive debut performance to take control of the first round of the two game series against Pakistan at SuperSport Park. Bosch, batting at No. 9, played a pivotal role with an unbeaten 81 off 93 balls, marking the highest score ever by a debutant in that position in Test cricket.. His innings transformed South Africa’s modest lead into a towering 90-run lead as the hosts were bowled out for 301 in reply to Pakistan’s 211.
Corbin Bosch’s debut heroics propel South Africa to dominance
Bosch’s innings was peppered with 15 exquisite boundaries, showcasing his ability to combine technical precision with aggressive intent. Their remarkable knock came under immense pressure after the team lost wickets in quick succession, leaving the innings precariously placed at 213-8. The match was decisively tilted in favor of South Africa, thanks to Bosch’s collaboration with the lower teams. First he added 41 runs along Kagiso Rabada (13), steadying the ship after a mid-innings collapse, and then extended the lead further with a last-man 47-run stand. Daniel Paterson (12).
Bosch batted with style and confidence, displaying a wide range of strokes that left the Pakistan players visibly frustrated. His ability to find space with precision coverage and throws underlined his batting prowess. Despite being a fast bowler, Bosch’s top-class batting average of over 40 proved that he was more than capable of stepping up in a critical situation. Bosch’s bowling contributions were equally impressive as he finished with impressive figures of 4/63 in the first innings.. His ferocious pace and accuracy troubled Pakistan’s batsmen throughout their innings.
Pakistan stumbles before South Africa’s leadership
South Africa’s bowlers took advantage of Bosch’s heroics by putting Pakistan under immense pressure in their second innings. At the end of Day 2 play, the the visitors were struggling at 88/3still behind by two runs. The initial pair of Saim Ayub (28) and captain Shan Masood (28) provided a positive start, countering South Africa’s formidable pace attack with a 49-run opening stand. However, Pakistan’s progress was derailed when they lost three wickets in just 25 runs in worsening lighting conditions. Kagiso Rabada provided the breakthrough, dismissing Ayub with a searing delivery that dropped him.
Marco Jansen He further tightened South Africa’s control by removing Masood and the top scorer of the first innings. Kamran Ghulam (8) in quick succession. Jansen took advantage of the gloomy conditions brilliantly, finding the outside edges of both batsmen with well-directed deliveries to slide and gully respectively. Pakistan’s hopes now rest on Babar Azam (16 not out) and Saud Shakeel (8 not eliminated), who showed some resistance before bad light put an early end to the day’s play. With South Africa’s bowlers maintaining relentless pressure, the visitors face a daunting task to regain parity in the match.

South Africa bounces back after middle-order collapse
Earlier, South Africa’s strong position came after overcoming a worrying collapse in their first innings. The team was sailing at 178/4 when a fire spell from Naseem Shah caused a dramatic drop, reducing them to 213/8. Naseem bowled a marathon 10-over spell, claiming three crucial wickets, including the opener’s prized scalp. Aiden Markramwho top-scored with a fluent 89. Markram missed what would have been his eighth Test century, beating a delivery on the leg side of Khurram Shahzad to the goalkeeper Mohamed Rizwan. His dismissal left South Africa’s middle order vulnerable, with captain Temba Bavuma (31) and David Bedingham (30) also failed to convert their outputs.
Bavuma and Markram had earlier stabilized the innings with a 70-run fourth-wicket stand. However, the expulsion of Bavuma, overcoming a long ball Amer Jamalopened the floodgates for Pakistan bowlers. Bedingham briefly counterattacked, smashing five boundaries in his 33-ball knock, but Naseem’s extra bounce proved too much to handle when Bedingham played a sharp delivery for first slip just before lunch. The collapse of South Africa seemed to bring momentum back to Pakistan until Bosch’s recent heroics changed the situation dramatically.
Bosch’s counter-attack, coupled with Paterson’s resilient batting, not only extended the lead but also demoralized Pakistan’s bowling attack. Paterson showed off his own batting skills, hitting six in a row in the comeback. Mohammad Abbas (1/79), returning after three years. Although Bosch fell short of what could have been a memorable debut century, his contribution ensured that South Africa went into Pakistan’s second innings with momentum firmly on their side.

It is absolutely shameful that average players like Bjorn Fortuin and Phehlukwayo continue to play ahead of vastly superior players like Corbin Bosch and George Linde.

This performance by Corbin Bosch is a testament to how selection is not linear. Numbers don’t always reveal everything, and sometimes instinct trumps numbers. He has had an incredible week wearing the South African Bosch colours.

Corbin Bosch played in the Caribbean Premier League for two seasons. He looked like a decent cricketer. It’s good to see him have a memorable Test debut.
