Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti admitted that his team did not commit to the plan it had against Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final and suffered a tough defeat. Los Blancos face Celta Vigo in the Copa del Rey on Thursday night, but the Galician team was barely mentioned after the Clásico.
Ancelotti was heavily criticized in the hours after their 5-2 defeat, but noted that it was just one game and that his team was still in all of its other competitions and in a good position to win them. One of the things that stood out about the Classic was that his team lacked ‘team commitment’.
“The lack of commitment is collective, it is not an individual commitment. The assessment of the match has been a poor defensive approach in all areas of the field. Nothing more to add.”
On several occasions he was asked to diagnose the problems that led to their second heavy defeat to Barcelona of the season.
“I have to clarify one thing, this is a press conference and not a debate. We have already had that with our players and the coaching staff. Doing it here doesn’t seem like the most appropriate thing to me.”
Earlier this season, Ancelotti noted that he felt some of the criticism directed at him had been unfair. He was asked if the most painful thing about him is that he does not prepare them well for the games.
“It doesn’t bother me at all because the team is well worked. “It doesn’t bother me because it’s not the truth.”
With his comments above, it was suggested that he might be questioning the will and desire of his team.
“The word commitment is used many times because it is a very important aspect of the game, which, added to quality, is what makes you successful. Having everything together is what we have been missing, but the important thing is to add individual and collective commitment.”
Los Blancos overcame their first Copa del Rey tie against Deportiva Minera and face a Celta team that has had ups and downs this season, but is generally dangerous. The Galicians showed it after the narrow 2-1 defeat against Real Madrid in Balaídos. Of course, Claudio Giraldez’s team has had many more problems away from home.
