The beginning of the end of Joan Laporta? Dani Olmo’s crisis threatens a political movement by Barcelona’s rivals

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has certainly lived on the edge during his second term at the club, but it looks like he could be close to falling this time around. The debacle of the signings of Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor, which could leave Hansi Flick without both players for the rest of the season, threatens to cause a political earthquake in the club.

Laporta was elected again to the presidency in March 2021, after Josep Maria Bartomeu was removed from power by a vote of no confidence by deputies. However, now he could suffer the same fate. In the case of Olmo, their star signing, who cost them 55 million euros from RB Leipzig, can leave for free with the 48 million euros that correspond to him for his six-year contract after only six months if he is still not registered and decides to do it. Barcelona believe they have done enough to sign him up, but so far that remains to be seen, and if they get it wrong, it will be a €103 million mistake that will fall squarely on their shoulders.

According to Diario AS, his political rivals are organizing in the background to present this as the latest proof that he is not the best president to lead the club. Víctor Font, who ran against him in 2020 as part of the group Si al Futur, and Joan Camprubi, who has been forming another rival group called ‘Som un Clam’, are organizing press conferences to address the issue. In some cases, a possible motion of censure against Laporta is being discussed.

For a vote of no confidence to occur, the motion must collect signatures from 15% of members to put the matter to a general vote. That vote must then have a majority of at least two-thirds (66.6%) to remove the current president from office.
