Real Madrid made to pay for errors as Athletic Club secure big win at San Mames

Real Madrid failed to capitalize on the opportunity to keep pace with Barcelona, falling 2-1 to Athletic Club at San Mamés on Wednesday. Barcelona’s 5-1 victory over Mallorca the previous day had put the pressure on Carlo Ancelotti’s side, but they couldn’t deliver.

Athletic dominated the first half, effectively neutralizing Madrid’s attack. Their breakthrough came in the second half when Iñaki Williams’ cross set up Álex Berenguer for a close-range finish.

Real Madrid had a chance to equalize when Antonio Rüdiger was fouled in the box, but Kylian Mbappé’s penalty was saved by Julen Agirrezabala. Jude Bellingham eventually leveled the score, continuing his hot streak with a goal in his fourth consecutive La Liga match. However, parity lasted only two minutes, as Federico Valverde’s error allowed Gorka Guruzeta to secure the winner for Athletic.

The defeat leaves Real Madrid four points behind Barcelona, though they have a game in hand. Athletic Club remains fourth in the league standings.
