Nike’s decision could see 1.5 million euros of Barcelona’s money go down the drain

Barcelona agreed to sign a new deal with Nike this winter, extending their sponsorship deal another decade until 2038. However, the first half of the year was spent exploring options with other brands.

The idea of producing their own kits was also explored, and the Blaugrana produced around 150,000 shirts. Radio Catalunya says the shirts cost around €10 each to make, but now the Catalan club is unsure what to do with them.

They need permission from Nike to be able to sell them or even give them away to their members and, therefore, their investment of 1.5 million euros is at serious risk. Nike is the only producer of official Barcelona kits and will understandably want to protect that position, but if they prevent Barcelona from wearing or releasing the kits then Barcelona will waste €1.5 million.

Naturally, an additional 150,000 Barcelona kits could have an impact on Nike’s official kit sales. However, it would be a terrible waste of money and resources at the same time.
