Hansi Flick will defend the case against Barcelona for the transfer of stars

Barcelona have returned home from Saudi Arabia on a wave of euphoria following their Spanish Super Cup victory over Real Madrid, but one of the main artifacts of their first title under Hansi Flick could be about to disappear. Ronald Araujo’s contractual situation has left the Uruguayan and Barcelona in a stalemate.

While Juventus considers presenting an improved offer for Araujo, Barcelona has scheduled a meeting with Araujo and his agents for this week. Sports director Deco is expected to open the door to an exit if Araujo declares his intention to leave the club.

The Super Cup, however, could alter Barcelona’s perspective. Araujo, for his part, was effusive in his celebrations in Jeddah, and received a lot of affection from his teammates. If, as expected, Iñigo Martínez is ruled out for the next five weeks, Barcelona will be much more shorthanded at the back, with Andreas Christensen still having a few weeks of rest to be able to play 90 minutes every three days.

Which leads to the second scheduled meeting for Deco, with Hansi Flick and his coaching staff. The German coach is expected to advocate keeping Araujo at the club to keep them in the hunt for titles. Araujo is ahead of Eric García in the pecking order, and if it were up to Flick, García would depart before Araujo, according to Diario AS.

The determining factor continues to be Araujo’s contract. Barcelona have to consider whether they can agree a new deal with Araujo and, if not, how much it will affect his market value if they don’t sell him now. On the other hand, losing Araujo could hurt their prize money and trophy aspirations, which would also be costly.
