India’s performance in the current Border-Gavaskar Trophy has set off alarm bells in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). A senior BCCI official indicated that if there is no improvement in performance during the upcoming Test match against Australia At the SCG and in the Champions Trophy, Gambhir’s position could be at risk. “You have to play a test match and then there is the Champions Trophy. If the performance does not improve, even Gautam Gambhir’s position would not be safe.” The official was quoted by India Today.

The Indian team has endured a difficult series against Australia, losing 1-2 and facing criticism for its inconsistent play. After a tough loss in the Boxing Day Test, Gambhir reportedly expressed his frustration with the players, leading to unrest in the locker room. Gambhir’s controversial appointment as India head coach
Gambhir’s appointment as head coach was not without controversy. According to the BCCI official, he was never the board’s first choice for the position; that honor belonged to him Laxman Plumbingdirector of the National Cricket Academy.
“He was never the BCCI’s first choice (it was VVS Laxman) and some of the better-known foreign names didn’t want to coach in all three formats, so it was a compromise. Obviously, there were other compulsions as well.” added the official.
