Atletico Madrid have supposedly been interested in signing a holding midfielder for some time and, despite their summer of big spending, they did not do so. After Arthur Vermeeren’s failed experiment, coach Diego Simeone requested one of his former goals.
According to Relevo, Simeone has once again suggested the signing of Alan Varela. The 23-year-old player joined Porto in 2023 from Boca Juniors for 12 million euros and is Cholo’s preferred option for the position. Players such as Samu Costa and Luis Milla have been linked to Atlético, but were options liked by outgoing sporting director Andrea Berta, as was Vermeeren.

Simeone is currently using Pablo Barrios and Rodrigo de Paul in the midfield. With veteran Koke Resurreccion playing less, it’s a position Simeone has clearly been thinking about for some time. Axel Witsel is probably the one who has closest played the role that Varela would theoretically occupy, but Simeone has made it clear that he prefers the Belgian in defense.
