Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has been heavily questioned in recent weeks and, despite Los Blancos moving within two points of Barcelona with a game in hand, he is still surrounded by doubts for the future. There was even talk that he could be replaced before the end of the season if results did not improve.
Los Blancos face Atalanta on Tuesday night and are currently 24th in the Champions League. Anything less than a win against the Serie A leaders would see them miss out on the play-off spots with just two games remaining. Ancelotti was asked if he felt there was more at stake.
“No, nothing more. There will be three important points to qualify. It will be difficult to finish in the top eight, so unfortunately we will have to play in the round of 32. But tomorrow it’s only three points.”
Ancelotti was noted to be remarkably calm given the situation, although that is one of his most consistent traits.
“I fully trust my team, my players. We have improved and now we have some momentum. “Tomorrow could be the most complicated game between now and the end of the year.”
When asked how he managed to continue at the highest level for so long in European football and how coaches in general manage to overcome difficult times, Ancelotti had a more direct message.
What is your level of concern for the team?
“Medium, medium. It has not dropped compared to before Girona. We are worried about finding a good strategy to beat a rival like Atalanta, who is very tough. But no more. Medium.”

“The coach endures if the club endures; If not (laughs), the coach can’t stand it. It’s that simple. There is no other recipe. The club-coach relationship is very important for success. The basis must be trust. If you are successful it is because this relationship has been very good,” Ancelotti remarked in a more serious tone.
Following those doubts, and numerous reports in the local press about where he was going wrong, it has also been rumored that Ancelotti is disappointed with the club and its lack of faith in recent weeks. This is backed up by his press conference last Friday, when he noted that he had been hurt by some of the more “personal” criticism and not just the tactical attacks against him.
