Barcelona has serious doubts about its position despite its young star

Earlier this season, Barcelona were linked with a surprise move for Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies, whose contract expires next summer. It seems that this possibility has escaped them, but the Blaugrana intend to look for a left-back sooner rather than later.

According to Diario AS, his finances are unlikely to allow that to happen in the January transfer window, but bringing in a left-back who is solid defensively is a priority. Although Barcelona’s sports department values Alejandro Balde and his offensive qualities, they have doubts about his defensive ability and his concentration without the ball. In particular, they worry about him during important games.

While Gerard Martín has made admirable efforts this season, in his words, and Héctor Fort is appreciated as a talented footballer, the Blaugrana believe that the latter is more skilled with the ball than without it, as is Balde. Likewise, they don’t believe Alex Valle, who is impressing on loan at Celtic, is the answer.

The left back has been a problematic position for some time at Barcelona. Although Balde seemingly made it his own during Xavi Hernández’s second season, he hasn’t progressed dramatically since then. Likewise, before that, Jordi Alba was an offensive weapon but an area that rival coaches attacked with the ball.
