Real Madrid star Vinícius Júnior has reportedly asked La Liga President Javier Tebas to retract his recent comments accusing the Brazilian of watching a pirate stream of a match. Tebas claimed that Vinícius illegally streamed the Liverpool vs. Real Madrid game in Spain, an accusation the player strongly denies.
Vinícius had shared a photo on social media of the match playing on his TV while supporting his teammates. Shortly after, Tebas, speaking at an anti-piracy conference in Buenos Aires, implied the player had accessed the broadcast illegally, stating:
“If it is in Madrid, and I think it was in Madrid, it is piracy. Access to the Champions League in Spain must be through Movistar Television.”
This controversy began with an Instagram story by Vinícius, showing the game with a TNT Sports logo visible. Tebas sent a letter to Real Madrid, alleging unauthorized streaming, further claiming:
“To watch this content, you need a VPN or a satellite dish pointed somewhere else. He was hacking the game.”
However, sources told ESPN that Vinícius was using a legitimate international subscription with a Brazilian operator that provides access to the game without geo-restrictions. His representatives have presented evidence of this to La Liga, requesting an official retraction from Tebas.
Tebas has made combating illegal streaming his top priority, asserting that La Liga loses €600 million annually due to piracy. Despite this, he has faced criticism for the high cost of legally accessing Spanish football, which is the most expensive in Europe.
