The former Barcelona defender wants to return to the club, valued by sports director Deco

Portuguese full-back Joao Cancelo had a rollercoaster ride at Barcelona last season, arriving in excellent form from Manchester City on loan but ending the year as one of their weakest players. However, the veteran full-back is eager to get a second chance at Barcelona.

Cancelo was scheduled to return to Barcelona last summer and waited to see if a deal could be reached. However, Sport explains that City were not willing to accept another loan and Barcelona did not have room on their salary cap.

Cancelo, 30, is willing to do anything to return to Barcelona, considering it the best place for his football. Sporting director Deco had intended to bring him back to the club, but with his salary cap issues, he explored other options, including Almería’s Marc Pubill. Last summer, Cancelo moved to Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia for €20 million, but also doubled his salary.

Deco and manager Hansi Flick are interested in strengthening the full-back position next summer, but Deco would prefer to find a younger full-back for the right side who is capable of progressing and making the position his own. Initially, they could cover Jules Kounde, allowing him to rest more and play in central defense.

The right-back position has been a constant problem for Barcelona for much of the last decade, and although Kounde impressed earlier in the season, his form has dipped of late. Many attribute this to fatigue, with Hector Fort being the only natural alternative in Flick’s team.
