Former Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti is contemplating retirement at just 31 years old, with chronic knee problems coming back to haunt him once again.
The veteran French defender has played only one game in 2024, and has undergone two more knee operations, one in February and another in August. His contract ends next summer and Lille intend to let him go.

Umtiti looked like he was starting to return to form two seasons ago, playing regularly for Lecce on loan in 2022-23, and Lille signed him on a free transfer. However, with his last game in January, Lille have little hope of his return, and Sport say Umtiti could leave him.
Umtiti looked like one of football’s great talents when he arrived at Barcelona, but after postponing knee surgery so he could compete in the 2018 World Cup, which he won, he has been battling knee problems ever since.
