Shreyas Iyer has emerged as the central topic of conversation once again recently after Kings of Punjab (PBKS) named him captain of his team for the next season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). PBKS bought the 30-year-old for a whopping INR 26.75 crore in the latest auction after his triumphant run to win the prestigious league title with the Calcutta Knights Riders (KKR).
The Preity Zinta-owned franchise is now hoping that with Iyer as captain, their team will advance in the season to clinch their first IPL glory.
Shreyas Iyer’s emphatic career as skipper in IPL
Iyer has established himself as a successful IPL captain, leading in 71 matches with 40 wins, 31 losses and a commendable winning percentage of 56.35. His leadership journey began with Capitals of Delhiwhere he captained the team from 2018 to 2020, leading them to their first IPL final in 2020 and achieving a win rate of 56.09% in 41 matches. In the 2022 auction, he moved to KKR and quickly made an impact, guiding the team to its third IPL title in just his third season, with a winning percentage of 56.70 in 30 matches. Surprisingly, Iyer became the youngest captain in the IPL at the age of 23 years and 142 days during the 2018 season. He also has the unique distinction of being the only captain to have led two different teams (Capitals in 2020 and KKR in 2024) to the final of the IPL.
