SA vs PAK: Fans mercilessly troll Babar Azam for his failure with the bat on Day 1 of the Boxing Day Test

Babar AzamThe long-awaited return to PakistanThe Test setup proved anticlimactic as the star batsman managed to score just four runs before falling to a soft dismissal against South Africa. Entering the crease at 36/1 during the 15th over, Babar started in style, hitting an authoritative boundary off the first ball he faced. The shot seemed to signal the arrival of a classic Babar tackle, but his stay in the box was short-lived.

Babar Azam’s shot selection under scrutiny

The manner of dismissal once again raises questions about Babar’s shot selection in Test cricket. After a promising start with a boundary, the Pakistani captain looked hesitant, playing nine straight points before attempting an ill-timed touch for a wide delivery. On the second ball of the 18th over, he beat a stray delivery from Daniel Paterson right to Aiden Markram on the second slip. Markram made no mistake and completed a simple catch to send the former Pakistan captain back to the pavilion. The shot lacked conviction and resulted in an easy catch for Markram, leaving the visitors in a precarious situation on Day 1 of the first Test against South Africa at SuperSport Park, Centurion.

Rough start for Pakistan’s batting line-up against South Africa

Babar’s dismissal further prolongs a worrying drought in the longest format of the match. The right-hander has now gone 19 consecutive Test innings without a score of more than fifty. His last significant contribution came in December 2022 during the Boxing Day Test against New Zealandwhere he scored an emphatic century in Karachi.

Babar’s early departure was a major setback for Pakistan, who relied on their captain to anchor the innings on a challenging Centurion pitch. His wicket brought the vice-captain. Saud Shakeel at the crease as Pakistan tried to rebuild. But somehow it also fell early Pakistan reached 88/4 at lunch. However, the dismissal also sparked a storm on social media, where critics and supporters expressed disappointment at Babar’s continued inability to convert departures into substantial scores in Test cricket.
