New details emerge about the sale of VIP boxes in Barcelona before the arrival of the 1:1 rule

Barcelona believe they are close to being within their salary cap again, having submitted documents from their latest asset sale to La Liga. In an attempt, which may or may not be successful, to register Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor for the second half of the season, the Blaugrana have agreed to sell the commercial rights to some of their VIP seats at the newly renovated Camp Nou for the next two decades.

According to Relevo, the agreement will be closed for around 110 million euros, with two entities from Dubai and Qatar respectively. MD says the deal will not see all revenue from their VIP seats leave the club and they still expect to earn around €25,000 a year for each VIP seat.

That said, the total figure Barcelona was expected to earn for the rights it sold to those two companies is still unclear. Logically, those anonymous companies would expect to add significant value on top of what they have spent, while Barcelona will also lose out in terms of inflation.

The Catalan newspaper explains that Barcelona hopes to be able to operate in the transfer market within its salary limit after this agreement, covering the 60 million euros that La Liga president Javier Tebas had said it was missing. In effect, it means that Barcelona can spend the same amount of money they bring in, rather than being forced to use only 50% of the extra money they bring in towards their salary cap.

If that is the case, it would contradict recent reports, which claim that Barcelona are still €153 million over their salary cap, almost double last season’s figure. Given President Joan Laporta’s lack of transparency about his salary cap and La Liga’s commitment to confidentiality in this regard, it is difficult to determine the truth about this. It could lead to the absurd situation in which Barcelona lose Olmo and Víctor for the rest of the season, but can spend in the transfer market.
