Martin Guptillone of New Zealandone of the most prolific opening batsmen, has officially announced his retirement from international cricket. Guptill, known for his notable performances in both ODIs and T20Is, has decided to hang up his boots after a distinguished career that has left an indelible mark on the sport.

Guptill’s career is littered with numerous highlights that have contributed to his legacy. He holds the record for highest individual score in a Cricket World Cup match, an unbeaten 237 against West Indies during the 2015 tournament. His aggressive style and ability to score quickly made him a key player on New Zealand’s white-ball teams.
Guptill’s IPL career
Despite being an extremely talented and explosive batsman in white-ball cricket, Guptill struggled to establish himself in the highly competitive Indian Premier League (IPL). Known for his aggressive strokeplay and consistency in international cricket, the New Zealand opener could not translate his success to the IPL stage.
Over the course of his sporadic appearances, Guptill featured in just 13 matches over several seasons, managing to score 270 runs at an average of 22.5, including a solitary half-century. His limited opportunities and lack of impactful performances prevented him from securing a permanent place in the cash-rich league, leaving fans wondering what could have been had he been given a longer career or better adapted to the challenges of the IPL.

Guptill’s salary in the Indian Premier League
1. Bombay Indians (2016)
Guptill made his IPL debut for five-time champions Mumbai Indians in 2016. He joined the team as a substitute player and featured in three matches during the season. Guptill managed to score 57 runs, his biggest contribution being a knock of 48 for MI.

2. Kings of Punjab (2017)
In the following season, Guptill was picked up by the Punjab Kings. Although he featured in seven matches for the Mohali-based franchise, he struggled to make a significant impact. Guptill scored 132 runs, with an unbeaten 50 being his highest score.

After a two-year break, Guptill returned to the prestigious tournament when Sunrisers Hyderabad signed him for the 2019 season. However, he got the opportunity to play only three matches, scoring 81 runs, with a top score of 36.
