Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has made Wojciech Szczesny’s role clear for the rest of the campaign.
Flick has faced a key decision over his goalkeeping position for tonight’s Spanish Super Cup final against Real Madrid after leaving out Iñaki Pena for arriving late to a team session.
The former Bayern Munich coach has a strong reputation for punishing delays and Pena missed the 2-0 semi-final win over Athletic Club when Szczesny started in Jeddah.
The Polish veteran was forced to wait until early 2025 for his eventual club debut, with Peña being Flick’s clear number one choice this season.
Flick named an unchanged starting team to face Los Blancos in the final and admitted that Szczesny’s call-up will not be maintained for the next few months.
“We are in the final of the Super Cup and we will finish the Super Cup with Szczesny in the goal, but it is not a decision for the future, it is for tonight,” according to Mundo Deportivo before the match.
Flick’s message will reassure Pena about his position, but the Spanish stopper has heeded the warning about his approach as Barcelona chase four potential titles in 2025.
