Fans react as Rahmat Shah and Hashmatullah Shahidi’s marathon revives Afghanistan’s hopes against Zimbabwe on day three of the Bulawayo Test.

Afghanistan He started the third day at 95/2, trailing Zimbabwe by a massive 491 runs. The pressure was on their batsmen to put in a resilient performance against a disciplined Zimbabwe bowling attack. At the height of the circumstances, Rahmat Shah and Hashmatullah Shahidi built a marathon partnership that not only stabilized Afghanistan’s innings but also showcased their courage and skill at Test level. Unfortunately, Afghanistan has reached an impressive 425/2, behind by only 161 runs with Rahmat and Shahidi firmly in control.

Rahmat Shah’s record double century

Rahmat was the standout player, producing an unbeaten 231, one of the greatest Test innings in Afghanistan cricket history. With 416 deliveries, his innings was a masterclass in patience and shot selection. Rahmat’s ability to rotate the strike and make loose deliveries kept the Zimbabwe players under constant pressure. His crisp strokeplay, which included 23 boundaries and three sixes, highlighted his dominance at the crease. Rahmat also showed remarkable concentration, with his decisive moments (reaching 100 off 198 balls and then 200 off 371 balls) marking an innings of immense maturity. Rahmat further joined the elite club by becoming the second Afghan batsman after Shahidi to score a double century in Tests.

Hashmatullah Shahidi’s brave support anchors Afghanistan

Shahidi brilliantly complemented Rahmat with a consistent 141 off 276 balls. While Rahmat played the role of aggressor, Shahidi anchored the partnership, displaying his solid technique and temperament. His knock included 16 boundaries, with his fifty coming from 108 balls and his century from 201 deliveries. Shahidi’s ability to occupy the crease for prolonged periods allowed Afghanistan to rebuild after early losses from Sediqullah Atal and Abdul Malik. Together, Rahmat and Shahidi formed an unbroken partnership of 361 runs for the third wicket, a record stand for Afghanistan in Test cricket.

Zimbabwe bowlers struggle on a flat track

Zimbabwe’s bowlers worked hard on a flat Bulawayo surface that offered little help. Muzarabani Blessing and Trevor Gwandu managed to claim early wickets but the attack lacked the penetration to trouble Rahmat and Shahidi. Sean Williams and Brandon’s problem launched long periods without success, while Afghanistan capitalized on the conditions. The hosts’ inability to generate a reverse swing or extract spin made the task even easier for the Afghan batsmen, who batted with remarkable discipline and intent.

With two days left and Afghanistan trailing by just 161 runs, the match is intriguingly set up. Zimbabwe will look to regroup and strategize to break the Rahmat-Shahidi partnership early on Day 4 and regain control of the game. On the other hand, Afghanistan will try to surpass Zimbabwe’s total and establish a competitive contest.
