Barcelona marked their 125th anniversary last Friday with a gala at the Liceu theatre, attended by several notable figures from both the club’s past and present. The celebration was a moment of reflection, filled with nostalgia for fans around the globe.
Former player Emmanuel Petit, who has previously discussed the distinctive nature of Barcelona, shared his thoughts on what sets the Catalan club apart from others. In an exclusive interview with Football España, Petit revealed the one thing about his time at the club that stood out to him the most.
“There are many things I remember from my time at Barcelona, even though it didn’t work out and I was only there for a year,” Petit said. “But one thing I really loved was the song played before every game, in Catalan—‘Tot junts fem força’ (‘All together we are strong’). I loved it. Why? Because it’s the DNA of the club. It’s something very important for the fans, and I really enjoyed it.”
Petit also pointed out that he has similar feelings for the traditions at other clubs. “I feel the same about Madrid, and in England, with ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ at Anfield. These anthems have become symbols for many clubs across Europe. But even the songs about the players during the matches are special.”
In Petit’s eyes, these club anthems and songs represent the core of what makes football special.
“The songs are so important—they connect the players and the fans,” he explained. “I remember a lot of things about Barcelona, but for me, this is the most impactful. You can feel the pride of the people, and that’s what football is all about. It brings people together. That’s what I love most about it.”
To mark the 125th anniversary, Barcelona released a special anthem on Friday. However, their traditional hymn, ‘El Cant del Barça,’ will continue to echo before every match. Originally composed in 1974 for the club’s 75th anniversary, this song has become ingrained in the hearts of their supporters. Whether at the Santiago Bernabeu, Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán, San Mamés, or Camp Nou, these pre-match anthems are an integral part of what makes Spanish football so unique.
