Endrick Felipe puts Real Madrid in the quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey after winning extra time

Real Madrid will be in the draw for the quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey, although their progression was not easy at all. They defeated Celta Vigo 5-2 in their round of 16 tie at the Santiago Bernabéu, which required extra time.

Carlo Ancelotti’s team dominated the early stages, but had to wait until the 37th minute to break the deadlock, in controversial circumstances. Moments after Celta claimed a penalty after Williot Swedberg fell under the challenge of Andriy Lunin, Kylian Mbappé scored a fine solo goal.

Three minutes into the second half, Real Madrid doubled their lead. Mbappé was back in the thick of things as he played with Brahim Díaz behind, and the Moroccan introduced Vinicius Junior to score his first goal of 2025.

In the final minutes of regulation time, chaos ensued. Arda Guler had a late goal disallowed by VAR, while Jonathan Bamba scored Celta’s goal shortly after. The visitors received a penalty in the 90th minute, which Marcos Alonso converted.

As a result, extra time was needed, although it was Real Madrid who emerged victorious when substitute Endrick Felipe scored the winning goal in the 108th minute. Federico Valverde would put the icing on the cake shortly after by adding the fourth with a thunderous shot , and things got even better when Endrick scored his second and the Whites’ fifth.

In the end, Real Madrid held on to win. They will be looking for success in this season’s Copa del Rey and it will be interesting to see who they will face in the quarter-finals.
