Somehow, Barcelona has maintained its unbeaten streak in the Champions League. They played an epic against Benfica at the Estadio da Luz, ending the match with a 5-4 victory for Hansi Flick’s team.
It was a terrible start for Barcelona as Spanish left-back Álvaro Carreras sent in a wonderful cross for Vangelis Pavlidis to crash into the back of the net. Wojciech Szczesny, making his first Champions League appearance with Barcelona, had no chance. nothing to stop him.
However, Barcelona only trailed for 11 minutes. Alejandro Balde made a good run into the Benfica penalty area before being fouled by Antonio Silva. Nothing happened on the field, but after a VAR control a foul was called. Robert Lewandowski stepped up from 12 yards and made no mistake to score his 102nd Champions League goal.
Barcelona took control from then on, but Benfica took the lead after a howler from Wojciech Szczesny, giving Pavlidis the chance to score his second goal, which he took advantage of. It’s an incredible victory for Barcelona, who trailed 4-2 with 15 minutes left. That result also secures their place in the Champions League round of 16.
