He Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) witnessed a moving moment on the field when Mehidy Hasanthe captain of khulna tigers, had a special gesture to King of Chittagong‘s Tom O’Connell to the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur. The incident received wide recognition in the cricket community.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz shows true sportsmanship
The incident occurred while Khulna Tigers were playing against Chittagong Kings and the latter were chasing a total of 204 runs. Haider Ali was fired for Mohammad Nawaz which gave way to the arrival of the Australian batsman O’Connell to the area. But his arrival took longer than expected. Puzzled and frustrated at wasting time, Hasan appealed to O’Connell for a timeout. The on-field umpire made the decision in favor of the Tigers, but upon reviewing his decision, Tigers captain Hasan decided to withdraw his appeal. O’Connell had already returned to the pavilion and was called back into the box to bat for the Kings.
However, O’Connell was unable to convert a graceful opportunity for the Tigers when the Australian batsman was dismissed for a golden duck by Mohammad Nawaz who gave a stellar performance for his team with the bowl. The incident revealed Hasan’s true sportsmanship. Had the Tigers captain not withdrawn his appeal, O’Connell would have been the first batsman in BPL history to be dismissed in this manner.
The only other such incident in international cricket was when Angelo Mateos was sent back to the pavilion during ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 in a match against Bangladesh when the pattern Shakib Al-Hasan enforced the decision against the Sri Lanka batsman.
