Barcelona are still struggling with their salary cap three years after the departure of the infamous Josep Maria Bartomeu, and that may be partly due to their difficulties generating sales for their big-money signings. Likewise, Spanish football in the past has been strong in that regard, but appears to be in decline.

According to a study by the CIES football observatory on the losses and gains from transfers (excluding homegrown players) from 2015 to the present, Villarreal is the only LaLiga team that has managed to place itself among the top 20. As Relevo points out, it is in 17th place and has sold 132 million euros more than it has spent. Previously teams like Sevilla and Valencia would have been famous for their profitable signings, but that is no longer the case. Real Sociedad (92 million euros) and Real Betis (103 million euros) are also performing well in that regard.
Barcelona will look to renew Iñaki Peña, whose current contract expires in 2026. Hansi Flick and Deco are happy with how the goalkeeper is responding to his sudden prominence. @gbsans

Other offenders in this sense are Real Madrid, which has a negative balance of 131 million euros. Atlético de Madrid is much lower in the ranking, but has a negative balance of 54 million euros.

With Barcelona and Real Madrid there is an important caveat as they both rely on their academies to produce players regularly and, especially with Los Blancos, make a profit for them in the transfer market. This shows that the Yellow Submarine have not lost their touch, and it is no surprise that while Sevilla are floundering in mid-table after a period of success, Villarreal are fighting for a top four spot thanks to their success in the market.
🚨🇧🇪 JUST IN: Arthur Vermeeren will join Leipzig on a permanent transfer from Atlético Madrid.
He is approaching the agreed number of appearances, which could be reached in January, which would activate the mandatory purchase clause of 25 million euros.@kicker pic.twitter.com/PY6phHF7hk
