Barcelona confirms that the defender will be out for four weeks due to injury

Barcelona have confirmed that defender Íñigo Martínez has suffered a torn hamstring and that the Basque defender will spend the next four weeks on the wing. Martínez has been a starter for Hansi Flick this season alongside Pau Cubarsi, playing almost all of his games.

Martínez, 33, went off in the first half of Barcelona’s 5-2 victory over Real Madrid on Sunday, being replaced by Ronald Araujo. It means he will likely miss at least seven games, although it is a respite from the initial five weeks reported recovery time.

Martínez will be absent for Real Betis (H), Getafe (A), Benfica (A), Valencia (H), Alavés (H) and Sevilla (A), in addition to a potential eighth match in the Copa del Rey quarterfinals. final if they beat Real Betis this Wednesday.

In theory, he would return for the Champions League play-off round if Barcelona were left out of Europe’s top 8. The logical solution is to put Araujo in Martínez’s place, as worked so well on Sunday night. However, with rumors that Araujo could be leaving the club in January, he may have to turn to Eric Garcia or Andreas Christensen, who is yet to be given the green light for his return from an Achilles problem.
