Barcelona suffered a dramatic defeat on Saturday night, conceding the winning goal to Atlético Madrid in stoppage time after having dominated most of the match.
However, coach Hansi Flick was very positive in the post-match press room about the defeat, and that message resonated in the locker room. According to Sport, Flick told his players that, despite the defeat, they were back on the right track. He briefly mentioned some mistakes made in the winning goal, but tried to lift their spirits.

Still, the message struggled to overcome the disappointment. Several locker room heavyweights such as Íñigo Martínez, Pedri and Raphinha were visibly depressed after the match, and Flick’s team talks did them little good. Morale is generally low, with Dani Olmo and Robert Lewandowski frustrated by their own form, and others like Frenkie de Jong and Ronald Araujo frustrated by their lack of minutes.
Flick delivered a similar message during Sunday’s recovery session, but in the end the German coach only spoke to his players for a few minutes. The squad needs the Christmas break and a break from football.
The last month has been disastrous for Barcelona in terms of their title hopes, but now a turning point awaits the Catalan giants. If Flick’s message loses steam in January, it could be difficult for him to turn things around. Against Atlético their players responded, but without the result, that meant little, at least in the eyes of the players.
