Former Australian cricketer Mark Taylor has openly criticized the Indian cricket team’s decision to describe Rohit Sharma exclusion of the fifth and final test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 as being “rested”
Jasprit Bumrah defends Rohit Sharma’s exclusion
In the draw, substitute captain jasprit bumrah defended Rohit’s absence, presenting it as a strategic decision taken in the interest of the team. Bumrah stated at the time of the draw: “Our captain Rohit Sharma has shown great leadership by opting to rest in this match. “It reflects the unity of our team and our commitment to putting team interests ahead of individual preferences.”
Bumrah also confirmed two changes to the playing XI, with Shubman Gill replacing Rohit and Prasidh Krishna intervening for the injured Deep Akash.
Rohit’s form has been a major concern throughout the series. In five BGT innings, the Indian captain managed to score only 31 runs at a measly average of 6.20. His decline in form followed his struggles during the Bangladesh series, where he scored 42 runs in two Tests at an average of 10.50 and then another poor series with the bat against New Zealand. Given these performances, the decision to leave Rohit out of the crucial Sydney Test raised questions about the longevity of his Test career, especially at his age and amid increasing competition for the opener’s spot.

Mark Taylor’s strong words on Rohit’s exclusion
Taylor criticized India for its lack of transparency regarding Rohit’s exclusion, stating that the term “rested” was misleading. He argued that Rohit was dropped due to his form rather than opting out voluntarily. Speaking on Triple M Cricket, Taylor questioned Bumrah’s explanation at the time of the toss.
“This is not a crime, it is part of professional sports. If you are not fit, you are replaced. “This is how teams maintain their competitive advantage.” Taylor commented.
Taylor emphasized that being candid about decisions would maintain credibility and avoid unnecessary controversy. His comments have reignited debates about team accountability and the importance of clear communication regarding team selection policies.
“The bottom line is that the captain of a country does not opt out of the final, deciding the test match of a series. That doesn’t mean they’ve abandoned it forever. It means he will miss this match because he is not fit. But why not tell it like it is?” Taylor concluded.
Rohit Sharma has… chosen to rest? 🤔
