Atlético de Madrid will make internal promotion to replace the sports director

Atlético de Madrid sporting director Andrea Berta will leave come the new year after seven and a half years at the club. The Colchoneros are not looking for a replacement in the market.

Berta appears to have crossed paths with football director Carlos Bucero and Diego Simeone too many times, with their disagreements supposedly coming to a head. Diario AS says that the rojiblancos will seek to promote from within to occupy Berta’s position.

Two of his assistants, Julio de Marco and Ignacio Camacho, who previously played in the club’s midfield, are in the frame for the position. Another who could be appointed is scout Juanan Pérez, who was chief scout between 2013 and 2016. Bucero could also take on the role himself, despite his already heavy responsibilities.

Reading between the lines, Bucero seems to have been the one who held all the cards at the Metropolitan since his arrival earlier this year. The former Real Madrid player is said to have even been behind the evaluation of Diego Simeone’s replacements earlier this year.
