Barcelona faces Benfica again in the Champions League. After trailing 3-1 at halftime, they managed to get the goal back.
It was a terrible start for Barcelona as Spanish left-back Álvaro Carreras sent in a wonderful cross for Vangelis Pavlidis to crash into the back of the net. Wojciech Szczesny, making his first Champions League appearance with Barcelona, had no chance. nothing to stop him.
However, Barcelona only trailed for 11 minutes. Alejandro Balde made a good run into the Benfica penalty area before being fouled by Antonio Silva. Nothing happened on the field, but after a VAR control a foul was called. Robert Lewandowski stepped up from 12 yards and made no mistake to score his 102nd Champions League goal.
Barcelona took control from then on, but Benfica took the lead after a howler from Wojciech Szczesny, giving Pavlidis the chance to score his second goal, which he took advantage of. The Greek striker would shortly after get his hat-trick from a penalty after a foul inside the area by the Polish goalkeeper, whose return to the Champions League has been a disaster.
Now Raphinha had made it 3-2 in strange circumstances. Anatolii Trubin’s clearance bounces off the Brazilian attacker’s head before flying into the back of the net.
A match of goalkeeper calamities 😳
