Villarreal negotiates the arrival of the Naples center-back with the link to Real Madrid

After a successful season on loan at Alavés last year, Real Madrid decided to cash in on centre-back Rafa Marín and sold him to Napoli for €10 million. However, just two appearances under Antonio Conte have led him to seek an early exit from Napoli.

Los Blancos retain a 50% selling fee for Marin, but it appears he will leave Napoli on loan in January as they still hope he can be useful to them in the future. Como has made a move for Marín, but Marca say Villarreal are now in pole position to sign him until the end of the season.

Marin has given the green light to the deal and talks are at an advanced stage. Napoli’s priority is for the 22-year-old to gain experience at the highest possible level, and the Yellow Submarine promise him an important role in the team.

Last season, Marín showed how solid he can be in Luis García Plaza’s Alavés, and he was also passable with the ball. He was hired by Napoli sporting director Giovanna Manna but clearly has yet to convince Conte of his virtues. With the second-worst defensive record in La Liga, Marcelino García Toral will no doubt be pleased with the reinforcements.
