The investigation concludes and the former president of the RFEF faces corruption charges

The investigating magistrate will recommend that the former president of the RFEF Ángel María Villar be charged with fraud and corruption, once the investigation into the ‘Soule Case’ is concluded. Villar is accused of favoring his son in some of his businesses at the head of the Royal Spanish Football Federation.

Although there was no direct contractual relationship between Villar and his son Gorka Villar, the latter participated in the selection of Spain’s matches and in financial agreements through his agency Sport Advisors. Cadena SER reports that he would select his opponents, agree on financial conditions and then take a deal to the RFEF, which is said to have been defrauded of €4.5 million over a decade between 2007 and 2017. The benefit The minimum obtained by Gorka Villar was 367 thousand euros in that period, while Villar Sr. facilitated it by avoiding internal controls and the bidding process.

Friendlies between Spain and South Korea, Chile, Venezuela, Peru and Colombia have been highlighted as examples where this occurred. There are also suspicions about another 235,000 euros that came out of the RFEF accounts for services not provided and the simulation of the retirement of its secretary to provide her with financial benefits. Five more members of his inner circle are also expected to be tried.

This is just the latest scandal to stain the name of the RFEF, following the dismissal of Luis Rubiales as president and the controversy over his successors Pedro Rocha and Rafael Louzán. The latter and current incumbent is currently facing a court decision over his suspension from office due to previous charges of perverting justice while holding public office.
