Kings of Punjab (PBKS) newly appointed captain Shreyas Iyer He recently shed light on his surprising departure from Calcutta Knights Riders (KKR) despite leading the team to their third IPL title in 2024. The move left fans and cricket experts baffled, especially as Iyer had played a key role in ending KKR’s decade-long title drought.
Shreyas joined KKR in 2022, initially impressing with his batting but struggling with leadership. Lack of communication baffled Shreyas Iyer
Speaking on Idea Exchange, Iyer admitted that he was baffled by KKR’s decision and the lack of communication from the franchise. Despite his accomplishments, he was left in the dark until just a week before the retention deadline.
“Winning the championship with KKR was a phenomenal experience. The fans were electric and my time there was special. But after winning the title, there was a long gap without concrete discussions about retention. That lack of communication left me perplexed. In the end, we mutually decided to separate.” Iyer explained.
Iyer also expressed his disappointment with the way the situation unfolded and highlighted that clear communication could have changed things. “When you find out about such an important decision just a week before the retention deadline, it shows that something is missing. “It was disappointing, but I had to make a decision and it seems like it was for the best.” said.

Moving towards new horizons
After KKR’s silence on the retention, Iyer realized that the franchise may no longer see him in their plans. While the lack of clarity was frustrating, he decided to focus on the positives and take advantage of his next opportunity.
“I assumed that if KKR wanted me, they would have started talks earlier. But things didn’t turn out that way. Despite the disappointment, I fondly remember my stay there. “Winning the championship was a defining moment in my life.” Iyer added.
