Kylian Mbappé has sought to set the record straight about his departure from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024 to join Real Madrid.
Mbappe completed a lengthy free transfer to Madrid after opting out of a move in 2022.
The France captain remained firm in his commitment to join Los Blancos and was eventually released from his contract.
The final weeks of his PSG career were mired in controversy amid reports of a breakdown in his relationship with the team, Luis Enrique and the club’s ownership.
Although Mbappé left the club as the top scorer of all time, with 256 in all competitions and six Ligue 1 titles, he did not achieve his goal of winning the UEFA Champions League in Paris.
Amid rumors that ownership lost patience with him at the end of last season, Mbappé claims it was the opposite, but regrets how he ended up with PSG fans.
“PSG is an ‘intense’ place, for better or worse. At PSG I had problems with certain people, because I was fighting for my rights,” according to an interview with Canal TV.
“The Emir [Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani] He told me ‘they’re looking at us, thinking I’m making you an offer to stay, but no, follow your dream, thank you for everything, if you ever need anything I’m here.’
“My relationship with the Emir has always been wonderful. It’s not Kylian against Qatar, as people say.
“But I should have shown my love better to the PSG fans, my problems were never with them.”
Real Madrid have not been drawn against PSG in the opening phase of the Champions League this season and both teams face a battle to reach the last 16 in 2025.
