Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has cast further doubt on the goalkeeper position, as Iñaki Peña and veteran Wojciech Szczesny compete for the number one spot. The former has retained the starting job since Szczesny came out of retirement to sign for Barcelona, but his two appearances in the Spanish Super Cup have sparked speculation that Szczesny could become number one.
Flick: “Liverpool are one of my favorite teams at the moment. I follow them and in every game they play very well. They are doing a great job.”

Szcesny also played in the Copa del Rey against Barbastro, and although he was sent off against Real Madrid, he only conceded one goal in his three appearances. Flick refused to confirm whether Tuesday night’s match will be ‘Tek’ or Pena against Benfica in the Champions League.
“This is something we discussed with the coaches. I said it changed a lot, because we see how Tek can perform in the Super Cup, and he is a champion, and you can see it. He has won many titles and has a lot of personality. I love how he acts on the field, I love it, we will talk and see how he does tomorrow.”
“As I said before, I don’t know what will happen,” he repeated when asked who would start against Benfica.
Flick was also asked how much it helps to have a great personality and someone with humor when it comes to dressing, as is the case with Szczesny.
“I think it is one of the best transfers we have made in this position. It’s not just his performance, but also his behavior with the other goalkeepers, it’s really cool to see. “Such a successful goalkeeper, and for him to bring his experience to the young players and also the other goalkeepers, is really incredible.”
Flick said before the Liga draw against Getafe that “a lot of things had changed” regarding the goalkeeper’s position after the Spanish Super Cup, having previously been quite firm that Pena would be his starter in the run-up to Christmas. The German coach also spoke about the lack of a penalty against Getafe and Barcelona’s poor form in the League during his press conference.
