Girona angered by blatant referee error during Copa del Rey defeat

Girona was surprisingly eliminated from the 2024-25 Copa del Rey on Wednesday following a penalty shootout loss to third division side UD Logroñés. The hosts incredibly secured victory despite being forced to use an outfield player in goal during the final 15 minutes of extra time and the penalty shootout, although Michel Sánchez’s team were slightly aggrieved by the way they was eliminated from the cup.

The decisive penalty was missed by Cristhian Stuani, whose shot was deemed not to have crossed the line after the ball hit the underside of the crossbar. However, television replays showed that the penalty had gone over the line, so it should have been a successful penalty.

After an impressive 2023-24 season in which they achieved their first Champions League qualification, Girona have struggled during the current campaign. The exit from the cup is the last blow, and things don’t get any easier as they host Real Madrid next weekend.
