Getafe 1-0 Espanyol
Getafe took the three points at home against Espanyol in a match that could be key to the relegation battle at the end of the season. At the beginning of the night, the two teams arrived at the Coliseum tied on 13 points, with Los Pericos in the relegation zone.
Getafe started strongly, with Luis Milla firing a shot wide, and after coming out quickly from the blocks, José Bordalás’ team soon got their reward. Their high pressure made them play most of the game in the opposite field and, after recovering the ball, Milla sent a cross behind Perico’s defense. Álvaro Rodríguez got ahead of his man and his header beat Joan García at the near post to take the lead after eight minutes.
Getafe, who had control, did not let up and Coba de Costa, on the left side, becoming their first La Liga star, was among the most dangerous. He made an effort past the post by just over a yard or two, and then forced Garcia to make a save as well. However, Espanyol warned Getafe before the half, with Irvin Cardona attacking on the counter, brought down just outside the area for a yellow card.

Manolo González did manage to react in the second half and for 20 minutes Espanyol exerted all the pressure. Alex Kral had a thunderous shot that Diego Rico blocked that seemed headed for goal, and captain Javi Puado was unable to finish off a header at the far post that bounced harmlessly on his best chance.
However, Getafe began to crush Espanyol’s reaction, as Omar Alderete and Dakonam Djene repelled everything in front of them. The first would actually come closer to a second for both sides, clipping the bar with a near post header from a corner. At the end of the match, Getafe had control of the match.

Bordalás celebrated Rodríguez’s goal vehemently and, for the first time in 2024, Getafe achieved consecutive victories at home. This leaves them three points ahead and leaves Espanyol two points from safety, although with one game less than Leganés. Getafe may only have 11 goals to their name, but they have the third-best defense in the division.
