Champions Trophy 2025: Suryakumar Yadav responds to his exclusion from the Indian team

In a sincere admission, Suryakumar Yadavthe captain of India’s T20I team, has responded to his exclusion from the team for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025acknowledging that his disappointing performances in One Day Internationals (ODIs) were the main reason for his omission.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the first T20I against England on Wednesday (January 22), Suryakumar expressed both disappointment and acceptance regarding the selectors’ decision.

Suryakumar Yadav acknowledges his poor performance

During the press conference, Suryakumar reflected on his ODI career, in which he scored 773 runs in 37 matches at an average of just 25.76. Despite being a formidable force in T20I cricket, where he boasts a strike rate of 167.86, his transition to the 50-over format has been a challenge.

“It hurts me to think that I haven’t done well. If I had done well, I would have stayed there.” he stated, highlighting his recognition of the selectors’ logic. When asked if he felt hurt by the non-selection, Suryakumar replied: “Why would it hurt? If I do well, I would have been in the Champions Trophy. If it’s not going well for me, it’s important to accept it.” His comments reflect a mature understanding of performance-based selections in professional sports.

SKY’s support for selected players

Suryakumar also expressed his support for those who were chosen for the Champions Trophy team, emphasizing that they deserve their places based on their performance in ODI and domestic cricket. “The team looks very good. Whoever is there, they are all good performers. They have done relatively well in that format for India.” he added. His comments indicate a team-first mentality, as he recognizes the importance of meritocracy in selection processes.

Despite his exclusion from the Champions Trophy squad and the upcoming ODI series against England, Suryakumar remains focused on leading India in the T20I format. He is scheduled to captain the team in a five-match T20I series against England starting at Eden Gardens on January 22. His leadership will be vital as India looks to build momentum ahead of big tournaments.

Suryakumar also commented on the possible return of the bowlers. jasprit bumrah and Mohamed Shami for the Champions Trophy, referring to them as “lethal combination” if it is suitable. His experience could prove invaluable as the Indian team looks to regain its status as a dominant force in international cricket.
