Barcelona salary cap situation: €72 million worse than last summer as Joan Laporta fails to keep his promise

Barcelona continues to face significant financial problems this season, as the last hours of the year approach to try to register Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor in La Liga, knowing that they will not be able to play the second half of the season if La La Liga does not approve that. Not surprising given his salary cap situation.

President Joan Laporta had promised that Barcelona would be back within its salary limit this year, both in the summer and autumn with the signing of the new Nike sponsorship deal. However, that has not been the case. In one of his attempts to keep Olmo and Víctor registered, the judge in their judicial procedure revealed that Barcelona’s current salary bill exceeds its salary limit by 153 million, as revealed by Cadena SER.

That is to say, Barcelona are now 72 million euros worse off in terms of the difference with their salary cap than after last summer’s transfer window, when the figure was 81 million euros, almost half of what it is now. Barcelona spent €57.4 million to sign Víctor and Olmo, and although there have been new contracts to hand out, they are concerned that after the much-vaunted deal with Nike, things haven’t improved much.

It was previously reported that Barcelona was €60 million short of registering Olmo and Víctor, and were trying to seal an agreement to sell the commercial rights to their VIP boxes for €100 million. The deal would last 20 years and affect VIP seating at Camp Nou, and Barcelona are currently waiting for the green light from La Liga for the deal.
