Barcelona plans to sell one of the two defenders if Jonathan Tah

It didn’t take long for news of Barcelona’s meeting with Jonathan Tah to become public on Thursday night, and they are firmly pursuing the German centre-back, whose contract expires next summer. But his arrival would have consequences at Barcelona.

The Blaugrana have already opened the door to Eric García’s departure in January, but if Tah signs, sporting director Deco intends to sell another of his centre-backs, reports Sport. Pau Cubarsi is set for a long career in his defence, while Hansi Flick’s faith in Íñigo Martínez will allow him to win another season at Can Barça.

It means that one of Ronald Araujo or Andreas Christensen will be pushed towards the exit door. Both of their contracts expire in 2026 and Barcelona have started talks with the Uruguayan for a new agreement, but there has been no contact with Christensen’s agents. That said, reaching a deal with Araujo will be much more complicated, due to his financial demands and interest from other sides.

The most recent reports place Barcelona in pole position for the signing of Tah. Christensen would also attract takers if he were on the market, but has so far been adamant that he wants to remain in Catalonia. It seems logical that if Barcelona cannot reach a new agreement with Araujo, then he will become the main candidate to leave. If not, Christensen will likely be told to find a new home.
