Barcelona expects a financial boost of 24 million euros from Liverpool

Barcelona have looked to capitalize on a number of young talents in recent summers, with the likes of Ez Abde, Chadi Riad, Mikayil Faye and Julian Araujo departing this summer. Two years ago Nico González left the club, but that could be about to generate a lot more money than initially thought.

Unable to find a place in Xavi Hernández’s team, Nico left for Porto, earning €8.5 million at the time. However, the Blaugrana retained a buyback option of 30 million euros and a 40% sale clause.

It seems highly unlikely that they will execute that buyback option, but Liverpool could activate their release clause at Porto. That amounts to €60m, and Anfield Watch says Liverpool have been impressed by his performances this season, with 10 goals in 24 appearances from midfield.

Real Sociedad’s Martín Zubimendi was Liverpool’s top target this summer, and they remain interested in him too: he also has a €60 million release clause.

It seems that depending on whether Zubimendi accepts his departure, Liverpool are considering other alternatives to reinforce the midfield. Nico, 24, struggled to find positional consistency at Barcelona and ended up being overtaken by the likes of Gavi and then Fermín López in the pecking order.
