The end of the Copa del Rey is here, since there are only eight teams left and all of them from La Liga. Giant-killers Pontevedra and Ourense failed to score against Getafe and Valencia, while Elche and Almería were dismissed by Atlético Madrid and Leganés respectively. The big surprise was that Athletic Club, the current champion, faced Osasuna at home in a 3-2 thriller.
🚨 In a few minutes the draw for the quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey will be held.

The Barça plane from El Prat to Lisbon still cannot take off. The weather is very bad in Lisbon, with rain and fog. The players are waiting on the plane, but they will arrive very late. @JosepSoldado

Barcelona’s terrible form in La Liga may prompt them to focus on the Copa del Rey if they increase the seven-point gap on Real Madrid, despite looking formidable against Real Betis. Real Madrid were whistled by their fans in a 5-2 thriller against Celta de Vigo that went to extra time, but they will feel confident again after a great victory against Las Palmas.
Atlético is another team that is coming off a surprise result, breaking a streak of 15 consecutive victories with the defeat against Leganés. For Los Pepineros, Valencia and Getafe, the Cup will be a distraction from their relegation battle, but also a chance to inject some positivity into their campaigns. Real Sociedad and Osasuna are competing for a European spot, but the Cup could be another route to Europe… or glory.

Valencia is the first team to come out of the hat, they will have a home tie against… Barcelona! Always a fun and heated tie at Mestalla between the two. The Blaugrana won 2-1 in their first La Liga game of the season, and the two teams will also meet this weekend in Montjuic.
