The Real Madrid veteran’s future depends on summer business as an exit is at stake

With Dani Carvajal out for the rest of the season and no signs of imminent reinforcements in January, Lucas Vázquez will likely get more playing time than he has ever had at Real Madrid. However, their most difficult campaign tends to be their last.

Los Blancos have executed successive one-year contract renewals with Vázquez, as is their policy with those over thirty years of age, and this season will be the same. Last year there were relatively fluid talks to extend his contract, but Diario AS hints it could be a little more complicated this season.

They say the club will leave the ball in Vázquez’s court, but if they manage to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool, which they are optimistic about, then Vázquez will be the odd man out at right-back. The club has Dani Carvajal, despite his long-term injury, and he is part of their plans for next season. Despite his importance to the locker room, Alexander-Arnold could mark the end of his nine-year spell, since he returned from Espanyol.

The 33-year-old has been a loyal servant of Los Blancos, achieving great achievements in various matches over the years after converting to right back from the right wing position. They have won several Champions League semi-finals with Vázquez on the pitch, but this season, like the entire Real Madrid defense, they have suffered defensively.
