The judge investigating the corruption case in Barcelona sees the alternative case dismissed for legal fraud

The Court magistrate leading the investigation into the Barcelona corruption case, involving payments to former CTA vice president José María Enríquez Negreira, has found himself in trouble over another investigation. Judge Joaquín Aguirre has been accused of judicial fraud in the Operation Volhov investigation.

The case linked pro-independence Catalan politicians to Russian authorities and attempted to try several figures, including former president Carles Puigdemont, on terrorism charges. However, the case was abandoned after Aguirre was accused of legal fraud.

According to MD, the Court’s ruling accuses Aguirre of using ‘imaginative alternatives’ to prosecute Puigdemont and company for terrorism, ignoring legal guidance and allowing personal opinions and his own view of events to influence the judicial process.

Of course, this does not mean that there has been any adverse process in the Negreira case: Barcelona has not been able to satisfactorily pay its payments of more than €8 million to Negreira. The investigation accuses Barcelona of sporting corruption and bribery, although the latter appears less likely to be pursued as it requires a determination that Negreira was a public official.
