Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly has expressed high praise for one of the current icons of Indian cricket, referring to him as the greatest white-ball player the world has ever seen. Ganguly’s comments come despite the player’s recent dip in form, including struggles in recent matches.
Sourav Ganguly highlights exceptional achievements of Indian cricket star
Ganguly praised Virat Kohli as a once in a lifetime cricketer, comparable to former Indian women cricketers Jhulan Goswami and Mithali Raj. He praised Kohli’s incredible achievement of scoring 80 international centuries and called him the greatest white-ball player of all time. However, the former Indian captain expressed surprise at Kohli’s form deteriorating after his century in the first Test of the Gavaskar Frontier Trophy 2024-25 against Australia in Perth, noting that despite his struggles in India, he was hoping for a strong series in Australia, which unfortunately did not materialise.
“Virat Kohli is a once-in-a-lifetime cricketer, as is Jhulan, as is Mithali. Getting 80 hundreds in international cricket is incredible. For me, he is the best white ball player the world has ever seen. But I was really surprised by the way he batted in Australia after the hundred in Perth. He had problems before that here in India, but I thought after the hundred in Perth, it would be a great series for him.” Ganguly said in an interview with Revsportz in Kolkata.

Ganguly shares optimism about the player’s future
Despite these challenges, Ganguly expressed Kohli’s ability to overcome challenges, highlighting his resilience and adaptability. The Kolkata lad acknowledged that every player has strengths and weaknesses, but emphasized the importance of adapting to weaknesses over time. Ganguly believes Kohli still has a lot of cricket left in him.
“But it happens. I think every player has his weaknesses and strengths but what matters is how you adapt to your weaknesses while playing great cricket over a period of time. I still feel there is a lot of cricket left in Virat Kohli,”he added.
